HOW IT WORKS
Well, the short answer is: we don't know yet.
No one seems to know how to distribute media digitally yet and still be able to afford producing more.
Sure, iTunes etc are figuring out how to sell it, but they don't produce it and the amount of pennies
trickling back to creators isn't enough to keep making flicks and shows.
So while everybody else recans TV shows from the 70s and while the writers picket down the block (they stopped picketing, yay),
we're here in the lab trying to figure out a way to do it that makes sense for everybody.
To start with, we're going to charge you to watch our shows.
Sorry, charlie.
The good news is that if you're a brokeass, all our shit is available on one torrent site or
another and from piracy kiosks around the globe.
So you don't hafta give us $$ if you don't want to.
We know it's more cost-effective to go to Netflix and rent our movies for free...
here's the only problem with that:
- Netflix buys our DVDs wholesale ($6-10 each) and rents them out thousands of times.
- A basic order from Netflix for an indie film is 60 DVDs.
- That means the filmmakers get $360-600 and Netflix rents the DVDs out to everyone in the country... and legally we can't stop them.
- We can't make movies for $360-600 each. So we're trying to figure out a better way to bring you our flicks and keep makin' em too.
We're launching this beta site with these basic terms:
For $6/month membership you get:
- 2 streaming movies (updated each month),
- unlimited access to our comix, telenovellas, and lifestyle shows.
Ok, that didn't really work.
(a) Monthly automatic renewals are annoying to you because you might forget and keep getting billed, and we're also being told by our friends who run paysites that it's really common to get huge chargebacks from the credit card company when somebody has a fit about the monthly renewal they forgot about... so it just kind of sucks for everybody.
(b) We don't want to have to ration out the movies 2 per month. You deserve better than that.
We've decided that the best solution is to make one all-access price that is good for a year. $6 per month for a year is $72, but we think that's kind of rough on the fans... so we're gonna try this at $55. It's a better deal for you overall and this way we can just give you full access to all the movies, comix, telenovellas, lifestyle shows, etc etc etc.
Fair? Let us know.
For all you people who hate commitments and like owning shit, we also have an a la carte digital download store--and it links to the DVD store, in case you dig shiny plastic discs. See, you've got all yer bases covered here at Televandalism.
This is a beta site and we'd appreciate hearing all your thoughts...
what works, what doesn't work, what sucks, and what's cool.
